I agree. The US have oligarchic crony capitalism supported by an utterly corrupt political system. Trying to abolish capitalism without restoring democracy and the rule of law is a fools errand. Not like it’s never been tried. And every time it just replaced one ruling clique of assholes with another one.

I’m also a happy Mint user. If you look for something that just works and causes minimal hassle, it’s an excellent choice.
If you already have a decent gaming PC you can game on it through your steam deck (or other handheld) with Steam Link. The deck will of course also work just fine by itself. There are more powerful handhelds but they’re all pretty pricey. If you mainly game at home, the PC is a better option IMO.
The main advantage Facebook has is the network effect. Everybody’s on there so it makes little sense to go anywhere else. That will be very hard to overcome no matter how good the alternatives get.

There’s probably some lightweight Linux distro you can get to run on it. It could be used for some edge computing, like Pihole.
Mint is still a great choice if just for the ease of installation. I agree they’re gagging behind a bit in the transition to Wayland but for most users that’s not really a big issue. Mint also has one of the latest communities so getting support will be easier. To me mint is still an excellent choice for getting started with Linux. I’ve been using it for years and i see no reason whatsoever to switch.
I’ve been gaming on Mint for years without any issue.
I’d go for VSCodium. It’s open source and has no telemetry but it’s close enough to VS Code to develop commercially useful skills.
