  • Maybe I’m missing something but when she welcomed me to the world of automated licence plate registration, it’s old news to me. These systems have been implemented across the world on local levels for decades, I have no doubt there’s illegal data retrieval from these systems by law enforcement and intel agencies.

    What even is “Parallel construction”?

Not to mention GPS built into newer cars, accessing the mobile network where every single cell allows for triangulation. And personal phones. And facial recognition. And door cameraes. And so on.

This battle was lost 20 years ago, regular people are just too demoralized to care if it’s done out in the open now. As always, the best time to adapt was 20 years ago. The second best time is now.

  • If websites are able to know what language my computer is using, I would expect local apps to have an easier time figuring it out. There’s also the possibility of setting a default folder to save photos in. Right now I can only select DCIM on internal or SD storage.

And regarding standards, I don’t accept the argument that there’s an eternal and objective gold standard. It used to be standard to have 640k RAM. It used to be standard to store images in a DCIM folder for compatibility reasons. Do we need those compatibilities any more? I’d say no.

  • Depends on what you mean by level of support. If you mean hardware, it will never get USB3 or display out. This will make it less attractive as a linux phone, which means it will get less support from the tinkerers.

If you mean community support, after reading a few topics on the Fairphone forums, probably never. To put it in perspective, I know I wouldn’t accept a hypothetical free FP5 to FP6 upgrade.
