US Mobile has been pretty good. Cheap, lots of non-throttled data, works on top of all major carriers in the US (not at the same time unless you pay extra), and data speeds have not been an issue so far. Personally, I’ve found that my cell service has functioned better than when I used Google Fi (e.g. I previously had connectivity issues in trains). I’m guessing this is mainly because I use Verizon (Warp) as the underlying carrier on US Mobile instead of T-Mobile.

Other than basic security features like preventing your number from being ported out without your permission and so on, I don’t really worry about security/privacy for the carrier since I just use a VPN (and Tor when necessary).

I guess this is popular? That’s a pretty significant number of stars.

Anyway, don’t really like the big AI focus they seem to have. It also wasn’t immediately obvious to me if the AI even works properly when self-hosted. It sounds like you still need to login for the AI to function.

The DB is apparently written in Rust, so that’s neat at least.

I feel like this about SimpleX. It was a hellish struggle to get people to use Signal (and still a bunch only use Instagram or insist on doing plain phone calls/SMS). Some of my family continuously complain that Signal is too complicated despite the interface being pretty much exactly the same as whatever app they want to use. I really don’t want to try to get them to use another app ever again.

I don’t really like Python, but I’m also tempted to donate just to support them for this.

The main issue with Session is they removed PFS when they redesigned everything. Also, it’s admittedly been years since I tried it, but I remember the app being noticeably buggy.

I do think the lower-end chips actually have great battery life, but once you start going for the higher performance ones you unsurprisingly sacrifice battery for power, so the battery life becomes merely “good” instead of “great.”

They have better battery life than most laptops, but it also strongly depends on what configuration you use and what you’re doing. For instance, my M1 Max laptop has never hit its stated battery life and frankly is pretty close to my AMD laptop (when its battery wasn’t half dead). The AMD laptop is admittedly heavier though.

AFAIK they’re about the same as the M4 in terms of battery life. If you look at their marketing, their battery life improvements are based on their Intel and M1 laptops (whose owners they seem to be targeting for upgrades).

From what I’ve heard, there are AMD laptop chips with better multi-core performance, although worse single-core. Other than the spec bump, this is pretty much the same as the M4 laptops.

Basically if you like macOS (and only macOS since Linux will probably take half a decade to show up given the current rate of Asahi Linux support with newer chips) and specifically need more perf for whatever reason (especially for AI), it’s a nice upgrade.

Hopefully this develops to be a real alternative in the future. Unfortunately, it seems to not really have much of the kind of music I tend to listen to atm.

IIRC they all kind of suck. There’s Transcribro or whatever, but I don’t think it supports many languages (maybe only English?). I used to just use Google’s and then revoked network access.

Wolf also was spouting about how great Trump is and how “woke” shit is ruining society or whatever in January IIRC. I briefly trawled through their social media when I was investigating their keyboard, Grayjay, and Immich and promptly decided to never, ever give them money.

Note that their keyboard doesn’t require network (at least as of now), so if you don’t give them money or promote it to other people, they don’t really benefit.

If you’re talking about Daniel Micay, he’s still heavily involved. I’m pretty sure he still maintains the accounts since they haven’t really changed writing style or anything. IIUC though he’s no longer the main dev.

I mean, I think they’re right that the security is worse. I’m pretty sure it’s worse on desktop too, just not nearly as bad. Last I checked, Firefox on Android still doesn’t do per-site process isolation by default, for example.

Finally escaping from Tensor jail. Hopefully the new phone has a decent design.
