Maybe search by tags? I know piefed allows you to do that. And Mastodon.
Either that or make your own search via api and exclude any community with more than X subscribers. Probably would work well.

Interesting, maybe! Ill take a closer look with the RTLSDR. I could swear it wasnt as chatty before. Thanks!
longfast. Thats about it. Ive had the system up for the last year and a half. Switched over to core and it stopped having issues all together communicating with a friend. I agree with you though, the lack of open source is a huge issue. MOST of the code is open source, but its strange their client is not. You can get around it by using the cli tools…but it just doesn’t have the traction meshtastic does.
What I really want is both to work together on a better repeater tech. Core is the only one I can get working over a fairly complex mesh. But meshtastic is much better in most other ways.
It should easily take the traffic, from what my RTLSDR says. Its just the amount of hops. It gets to 3 and stops. If you add more (say 5) it gets to a couple of friends of mine. But it starts doing some stuff to the network (lots of traffic in a short period of time). In an emergency situation, most of the mesh goes down (most of them are powered by the grid). But the personal ones were still working. But yeah the walky talkies were much better and working well at that time.
Heshtastic is fun, but It has the issue (in my area at least) where a good half of the messages dont get through, even though there is at least 40 devices in our area. Its a problem. The bounce limit means we have issues communicating and it comes in waves/sporadically.
We have had more luck with meshcore getting the actual messages out, but it has the opposite problem. No one uses meshcore so it doesn’t matter how much better is it at communication.
Both are awesome projects dont get me wrong. I love playing around with both as a side hobby. Hopefully its better where you are at.
Ironically the best was a walky talky for emergencies.
NGL a piece of paper and a calendar. It’s not high tech but its worked.
This is fascinating!
Yeah I block politics keywords for piece of mind. Excellent feature.
Can’t wait!
I’m not sure its been many years since I’ve looked.
He’s awesome.
Yep. Its part of the hobby. There’s a raspberry pi version. Just look up satnogs. Its a website. There’s also ARPA, meshtastic/meshcore, and a whole lot of other fun little side projects on communication.
Also there are citizen weather setups. They are not as good as the national weather service, but in places that don’t get a lot of coverage (some parts of Wyoming for example) they are great. They don’t use SATs but in theory could use that data as well. This is where my knowledge gets murky as I only know about them in passing. There’s kits online and on tindie (maker website).
Yes and no.
For communications sure. For general entertainment or old GOES satelite data, its fun and educational. I got a really good picture of one of the NOAA sats when the California wildfires were picking up and you could see the smoke stretch all the way to canada.
There’s a guy on YouTube that regularly shows what n orth k orea is watching on their TV channels. Its fascinating.
Its an open secret to those in the satellite tracking community. If you ever go n satnogs you can even get a 25/50$ USB RTLSDR and start tracking the old satellites today. Its a fun hobby.
So what happens when the files/code is attached to the immutable? Like a virus library bundled up forever in a release?
If the releases can NEVER be deleted, then wouldn’t it be even worse for admins? Or am I missing something?
Oh nice thanks. Ill give it a read!
A lot of smaller instances is actually better (in my opinion). Means that the cost of keeping them up will be consistent. And we dont actually need to be as popular as corp stuff. I like the small town vibes this whole scene fedi gives off. Theres probably a LOT of smaller < 10 user instances out there of people just wanting to do their thing.
Dunno on lemmy. On other platforms you can see.
Might be good to get em before all the tarrifs make computing more expensive. At least in the US.
nice
Got the log?
