If a tech executive says we’re on the cusp of a technology breakthrough it means less than nothing and we should be more suspicious of it than already. These are people who don’t know how to manage an organization based on the frequent layoffs (2009, 2014, 2023-2025 over 20k workers). People get fired because they fuck up, management layoff people because management fucked up.
Sandboxing by default and preventing Google and others from spying in and manipulating apps are good steps phone OS developers should use, but I don’t think those kind of things would help for this particular case.
As a developer I have reviewed open source code and reported vulnerabilities to maintainers. I think more of the cve issues are reported by university organized and funded security research groups but corps and independent individuals report some too.
The alternative is closed source, proprietary software where security vulnerabilities can be harder to identify by obscurity, but also be exploited for longer because they take longer to identify and report while others may still be using the exploit. This is what people mean when they say security by obscurity isn’t secure, because while it may grant the appearance of security if you prevent security groups from reviewing and examining code it may also prevent them from discovering vulnerabilities that are already being exploited. But measuring these effects sounds like an interesting read.
Biometrics aren’t passwords they are usernames, passwords necessarily change I’m not changing my fingerprints or iris or bhole or whatever they want to scan. With how easy it is to copy someone’s bio markers vs stealing their password this would be a huge security risk if they want to use it for entry to secured facilities.

I tend to go for the fire hose approach with news agencies AP, democracy now, CCN, RT Al Jazeera, BBC, France 24, Fox, common dreams, NPR, pew research, open source post, and a few geographically local sources. Entertainment pbs has a few, tvline, xkcd. Using capy reader.
Also pensions, airlines, and restaurants.
