1. Would be good to know the hardware you’re working, especially if it’s a laptop and the model.
2. What kind of freeze is this? Black screen, frozen graphics, mouse frozen…etc. Also whether is time-bssed, and how long it takes to freeze.
3. As a test, boot, and play music continuously until it freezes. Does the sound stop as well?

In all practical reality, Linux takes A LOT to topple over like this. It certainly would fair better than Windows with wonky hardware, but if it’s a laptop for example, maybe your fans aren’t working and therefore it’s a heat. Just try and define what kind of freeze it is first.

IBM or China. Long third might be Oracle, but I wouldn’t bank on them doing something not stupid.

If it’s just Desktop usage, not much difference than using anything else. Make sure to install updates when asked, and that’s about it.

Just be clear that downloading anything for Windows will not be compatible.

They all have issues. The OS portion is just ramping up again brought on by the Google coup on Android.

Honestly, you’d be better off getting something that runs a better Android OS for now versus running a Linux derivative.

Yeah, it’s worth asking though, because the solution has extra steps if it’s packaged with Snap or Flatpak.

It’s a good lesson to learn if you’re working with Samba frequently. Just always that there are two auth systems at work: SMB local to the server and filesystem, and the SMB protocol auth that does network access.

Yep, that’s what that means. Steam is probably active before your DE touches that mount, which then auto-mounts it for you.

What’s your DE, and did you manually change any settings to have it auto-mounts this partition?

Are you relying on your DE to mount this partition, or do you have an fstab entry for it?

This is almost always a race condition where the mount is not available to access by the time the Steam client starts (usually because it auto-starts). If not, there is an options issue somewhere in the fstab entry or your DE auto-mounts this partition only after you try and access it.

An easy test: reboot your machine, before launching Steam, use your file manager to browse said partition, THEN start Steam and see if it is properly loaded.

If you just want to remotely interact with LUKS to unlock it, I think dropbear-initramfs module is your only option.

Clevis+Tang is essentially the same thing but automatic, and yes it does require a separate machine and network access to that machine.

Just stick with Fedora for your desktop if you want a traditional desktop workflow without having to jump through hoops. Any of the immutable distros have hoops you don’t want to mess with as a beginner, and the decades of forum and docs history generally won’t have information specific to your immutable distro and how to manage, so stick with the basics and Fedora.

All distros perform the same in general as far as gaming goes. There is negligible if any difference even tuned straight to the kernel, hands down.

The only thing you’ll need to figure out is what Desktop Environment you fit better with to start: KDE or Gnome.

Gnome is more like MacOS, and KDE is more like Windows. Both can be used at the same if you really wish, and there is nothing stopping you from altering whatever you install to behave like some other distro trivially.

Fedora is a good starter to figure out what you do and don’t like about which bits, and then make more informed decisions after using it for awhile.

Clevis with TPM+Tang is the most secure you’re going to get as far as automated unlocking goes.

Dropbear is still a thing, but going to more problematic.

You must be mistaken. The sticks you mention have max out at 1080p, and with 2GB of mem, you’re not going to be running any desktop for very long. The Atom chips and the memory limitations just don’t make these useful candidates for anything with a DE.

About all they’re good for is signage and maybe assist tasks with HA. You won’t be able to drive a decent enough display to do normal desktop things for certain. Maybe use them as little seed devices or something.

This is absolutely insane. It’s so top heavy there is no way this will do anything but spectacularly fail, and take the entire economy with it.
